What's Up the Mountain Behind Our House?

A whole world, several communities, and a lot of cute babies.

We aren't doing active ministry up the mountain, at least not yet. Historically, the communities up there have been closed to the gospel. There's no road, so everything and everyone moves on foot. But Walter takes his daily walk behind our house, and on that path he keeps running into people going up or coming down the mountain. Over time, those small crossings on the trail have turned into real connections.

Because our house sits right on the edge of the mountain, that closeness has pulled us into people's lives in ways we didn't plan for. We've been woken in the middle of the night to drive someone to the hospital. We've put out a mattress so a young guy, too drunk to find his way home in the dark, had somewhere safe to sleep it off. We've helped people read their prescriptions. We've carried baby clothes up the mountain for families who needed them. We've been invited to birthdays.

None of it looks like a program. There's no Bible study on the calendar for these communities, no weekly meeting. What there is, is proximity, and a willingness to say yes when someone knocks in the night.

For now, we're just present, available, and paying attention.
