What Is Your Marriage Centered On?

Walter and I have been doing marriage and premarital counseling since the early days of our marriage, back when we definitely didn't feel like experts on the subject! šŸ˜‚

This year we will celebrate 25 years of marriage, and while I don't think anyone ever becomes an expert at marriage, I do hope that we've grown in wisdom and in our understanding of what really matters.

We love helping young couples get their marriage started well. We use a course called University of the Family, but really, so much of what we talk about comes back to one simple thing, what is your marriage centered on?

When our marriage is centered on loving and serving God, we will love and serve each other. When our marriage is centered on making ourselves feel good or being successful, things can get very messy very fast!

We had the privilege of spending a few months with Mildred and her fiancƩ, Walter (small world, two Walters at the table!), as they prepared for marriage. Mildred was one of our students back when we worked in the VIDA schools, so it was especially sweet to watch her now preparing to start a family of her own.

They are both a little older than most people who get married here, both independent and with plenty of ideas about how they want their lives to look. But more importantly, they both have a desire to honor God with their marriage.

We were honored to be the only non family members at their civil wedding, and then a few days later we got to celebrate with them again at their church wedding.

Walter prayed over them and offered an encouraging word at their civil wedding.

Watching someone you've known for years begin a new chapter is such a privilege.

We pray that they will build a marriage that isn't centered on what they can get from each other, but on knowing, loving, and serving God together.

We drove the bride to what is called the "religious" wedding, which is often a separate event here!
